Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Perry did not decide to consider a career in acting until after she had reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being afraid of the negative consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry claimed that she was nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began acting at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led the actress back to California and she was able to find theatre work. She performed on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She performed with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's show The Family. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC show Scandal. The same year her character was cast a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger character of her mom's character. The part was offered to her through audition, even though she is a relative to the character.
